Dave- JKYL + HYD

Seeing as we are using a Dave song, we can use his videos for inspiration for pour own production. Dave is a master of lyrics and word play, one of the reasons we decided to use one of his songs. Most of his songs are telling a story as well as giving a message and must mean an awful lot to him. JKYL + HYD was one of Dave's first videos which wasn't a freestyle. The song is about "the war in his mind" Dave is trying to "juggle college and money" but one of them "suffers because of music." The JKLD side of him is the normal good side where he is going to Uni however the darker HYD side is telling him to stay on the roads and keep trapping to make money. It is also telling part of Dave's story he says: Started thinking way beyond my age when I hit 17
                       I had a smile of a child but a mind like I'm 23
                       I mean 35, I lived a dirty life
This is taking about how Dave’s troubled life has forced him to grow up fast, by his 17th birthday he felt as if he had the life experience and mindset of a 23 year old man. He takes back the last line, he actually feels like he is 35, probably due to the vast amounts of emotional pain and stress that he has been inflicted with. His “dirty life” is referencing the life of crime that he lived prior, which is mentioned throughout this song and others.

The video is shot in a variety of settings including: Streatham Common (Dave's local train station), stairs of a council flats surrounded by his boys. on the high street and outside a corner shop. These locations were used as they are places that Dave has spent parts of his life and ones that he is referring to in the song. The director cleverly uses shots when Dave is with his boys when he is talking about his "friends." As Dave had no Father figure and both his brothers went to Jail he has no idols which has cause him to "put my heart in my friends." The video cuts to a wide shot of all of Dave's boys this makes clear interaction with the lyrics.

The Director also uses a combination of Colour and black&white shots to represent the two sides of Dave. The majority are in Black and white as this is the side Dave appears more often. As well as this all shots with Dave's "gang" are in black and white as they are all like family who grew up together and have taken part in darker things that Dave is mentioning in the song.

Dave is only 19 so the majority of his audience is a few years younger to a few years older. He touches on lots youth and urban issues.
